3 Seconds at a Stoplight

How long do you wait before honking your horn at a stoplight?

When I still lived in the Midwest, very rarely did I need to honk my horn. I found that most people paid attention to lights, traffic and the like. On rare occasion, I would run into someone that was helping their kid, or quickly looked down at their phone at the wrong moment. I think I maybe used my horn 5 times total, over ~10 years while I was still in the Midwest.

When I moved to the Atlanta area, that completely changed. Now, using my horn is almost a weekly occurrence, and if you drive on the highways around here, you'll know I'm not alone.

When I was still living in Michigan, I came up with the three second rule (not to be confused with the five-second rule for food). The three second rule is quite simple:

If I'm blocked by someone not paying attention while driving, I count to three. If I get to three, I honk.

I've shared this rule with friends and family, and I'll usually get a response like, "that's a very level-headed way to go about honking your horn." The reason you want to count to three is you give every driver the benefit of the doubt: they are paying attention generally; however, some people have kids, some need to change their map directions, etc.

The next time you're blocked, give someone the benefit of the doubt and count to three. I find honking is much more relaxing when you have a procedure for it.
